Milan, December 16 - Center-right politicians on Friday objected to center-left Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala, who suspended himself after being notified he is being probed for corruption in connection with the Expo world's fair. Sala was the government-appointed sole commissioner of the universal exposition, which ran for six months in Milan in 2015. "I think Mayor Sala should immediately return to his post," said businessman-turned-politician Stefano Parisi, who in June this year ran against Sals for mayor of Milan on a center-right ticket with backing from Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia (FI), the populist anti-immigrant Northern League, and the small rightwing Brothers of Italy (FdI) party. Parisi, now a city councillor, said Sala's self-suspension was "a hysterical, impulsive and excessive reaction" and that a notice of investigation "is not a conviction". He was echoed by League chief Salvini, who added however that "Sala may have been protected" until now. Lombardy regional official Viviana Beccalossi (FdI) said Sala should stay at his post if he's got nothing to hide, and should resign as mayor if he's got skeletons in the closet.
