(ANSA) - Cuneo, October 10 - Italy's economic crisis has
claimed another victim: the annual white-truffle auction.
The World Truffle Auction of white Alba tubers began 13
years ago as an annual event in the northwestern Piedmont
region.
Organizers have now decided they no longer have the
resources to properly organize such an undertaking more often
than every second year, putting off this year's scheduled event
until 2013.
"The World Truffle Auction is a very important event, and therefore deserves all the support needed to ensure a perfect result," said Piedmont Tourism Commissioner Alberto Cirio. The auction had been scheduled for November 11. Last year a double truffle weighing 1.2 kg was sold for 98,000 euros to a Hong Kong tycoon.
