(ANSA) – Fiumicino, January 4 – There was disruption to
duty-free services at Rome's Fiumicino airport on Friday as 44
employees of Italian-based World Duty Free Group (WDFG) staged a
hunger strike in protest over planned lay-offs.
Seven duty-free shops run by WDFG closed as a result of the
protest, sparked by the recent transfer of the management of
airport duty-free services to LS Travel Retail, a subsidiary of
France's Lagardere Services Group.
The WDFG employees are set to receive their redundancy
notice at the end of this month.
The French company will operate eight duty free shops at Rome's two main airports, Fiumicino and Ciampino, under a contract running until 2026. The duty-free business at the two airports generated around 61 million euros in the first eight months of 2012. WDFG is owned by world-leading Italian travel-catering group Autogrill.
