(ANSA) - Naples, April 19 - Thousands of immigrant workers
in the southern city of Naples demonstrated on Friday, asking
for guaranteed unemployment benefits for job seekers and people
who have lost their jobs.
According to police estimates, approximately 2,000
foreigners living in Italy marched through the city center
carrying banners and chanting "right to benefits and happiness".
Protest organizers placed the number of employed and
unemployed laborers taking part in the march as much higher at
10,000.
"This is the first time that demonstrators are calling to
be allowed access to a citizen's wage, not just legalized work
permits," organizers said.
Marchers included workers from the nearby Pomigliano Fiat
plant and the Campania regional environmental protection agency
ARPAC, responsible for waste disposal.
Comedian Beppe Grillo's anti-establishment 5-Star Movement
(M5S), which gained a huge protest vote in the inconclusive
February general election, has called for the introduction of a
universal system of unemployment benefits.
Grillo's Internet-based movement
holds the balance of power in parliament.
