Rome, January 22 - Senate Speaker Piero Grasso on Friday said that Italy has no future without the European Union. "Outside of the Union, no future exists for Europe. Against Europe, no future exists for Italy," Grasso said. "The economic crisis, the refugee and migrant influx, the dangers of international terrorism, and geopolitical instability at our doors are revealing serious egotism and disunion between European countries and dangerous impulses towards disintegration," he said. Grasso said the only way to guarantee well-being, security and rights for European citizens is an "even closer political union" hinging on three principle objectives: "economic policy attentive to production, innovation, labour, in short, people's daily life; long-range, cohesive and strategic foreign and security policy, particularly in the Mediterranean and the eastern borders; and a fair, united system for European asylum, respectful of the rights of refugees".
