Rome, January 21 - A Sanremo municipal policeman who was caught on camera clocked in in his underpants in a police probe into chronic absenteeism should be fired within 48 hours, Premier Matteo Renzi told Porta a Porta talk show Thursday. "Either his supervisor fires him, or we will fire the supervisor too," Renzi said. "And they will never get hired in the civil service again... (as) an act of respect towards the vast majority of public managers". Sanremo city hall said Tuesday it fired four employees in the absenteeism probe. Investigations showed many civil servants left work after they clocked in. One official went rowing during office hours. Finance police arrested 35 people in October in relation to the long-running investigation. The suspects face various charges including defrauding the state, embezzlement and forgery.
