Milan, January 21 - Milan's Brera Art Gallery has ambitious plans for the immediate future, director James Bradburne said Thursday. These include longer museum hours, different lighting, and a greeting staff in Trussardi uniforms, he told reporters at a press conference with Culture Minister Dario Franceschini. The 38-room gallery is housed in the 1615 Brera Palace along with the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, the astronomical observatory, the botanical garden, and the 1770 Braidense National Library, one of the largest in Italy. The collection includes work by Bellini, Bramante, Caravaggio, Piero Della Francesca, Guercino, Mantegna, Raphael, and Tintoretto, among others. The plan is to renovate each of the gallery's 38 rooms over the next three years. The first three exhibition halls will be open to the public in March, Bradburne said. Bradburne also pledged no major exhibits will be held for the next three years "because they cannibalise museums", and that all the gallery's masterpieces will stay in Milan. "This is a challenge for Brera and for Milan," Franceschini said.
