Rome, January 21 - A Rome court on Thursday rejected a request from prosecutors to put the case against the capital's former mayor, Gianni Alemanno, into an ongoing trial into allegations a mafia organisation muscled in on city contracts worth millions. Much of the alleged wrongdoing in the so-called Mafia Capitale scandal allegedly took place when Alemanno's centre-right executive was in charge of Rome from 2008 to 2013. Alemanno, who was also agriculture minister in Silvio Berlusconi's second government from 2001 to 2006, is accused of corruption and illegal party financing. But, unlike other suspects in the main trial, he is not defending himself from charges of mafia association. Alemanno's trial will start on March 23.
