Taranto, January 11 - The ILVA steel company on Monday told metalworkers' unions that it "isn't in the condition" to pay its part of salaries owed to workers who have been temporarily laid off, despite current regulations requiring it to do so, said the secretaries of unions FIM, FIOM and UILM following a meeting to extend solidarity contracts set to expire March 2. On Monday the company told unions it plans 3,519 temporary layoffs, set to start March 3 and last 12 months. "Given the unwillingness on the part of the company to pay its part of wages, and considering the discussions currently underway in parliament regarding (...) the cession of the ILVA group, we will immediately evaluate initiatives aimed at giving assurances to all workers, both on additional safeguards for salary as well as on future prospects," the unions said in response.
