Charred body found next to burning car (3)

Gas fumes and a cigarette caused explosion, officials surmise

Cuneo, November 22 - The charred body of a 43-year-old Italian was found lying next to a burning car in Ceva, near the Piedmont city of Cuneo, on Tuesday. A highway police officer raised the alarm after being attracted by a powerful explosion outside the local cemetery while on his way to work. The victim named as Simone Bonino was the son of the former Ceva municipal police chief. Surveillance camera footage from a petrol pump on the way to the cemetery shows Bonino filling a jerry can with gas and placing it in the car. Investigators have so far concluded that the car filled with fumes and exploded when Bonino lit a cigarette. His body was found some meters from the vehicle because he probably stopped the car and jumped out, trying unsuccessfully to put himself out. An autopsy will be ordered to dispel any doubt as to the manner of his death, officials said.
