Milan bourse gains 1.5% but banking shares tumble again

Milan, January 19 - The Milan bourse gained ground on Tuesday afternoon after backtracking following a buoyant start as banks that have come under the lens of the European Central Bank (ECB) for their bad loans portfolios continued to tumble. The struggling Siena-based MPS lost 6%, Carige 8.1%, Banco Popolare 7.6%, Bper 5.5% and Unicredit 3.3%, while BPM remained stable. Instead shares in Intesa and Mediobanca, which are not part of the ECB assessment, rose by 2.7% and 2% respectively. The shares in the six banks under ECB scrutiny had been readmitted to trading following suspension in the morning due to excessive volatility.
