Rome, January 12 - Bigwigs from the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S) on Tuesday denied knowing that the M5S mayor of Quarto near Naples, Rosa Capuozzo, was being blackmailed by an M5S member there who has been linked to the Camorra mafia. Roberto Fico, chair of the parliamentary oversight commission on RAI State TV, said neither he nor Lower House Deputy Speaker Luigi Di Maio "ever knew about any blackmail, threat or trade-off via threats to obtain something". Alessandro Di Battista, deputy chair of the House foreign affairs committee, agreed. Capuozzo, who was threatened by subsequently expelled M5S councillor Giovanni De Robbio in connection with allegedly Mob-linked building work on her husband's house, has herself now been ejected from the M5S but is resisting calls to step down as mayor.
