Italy 'betting syndicates' rigged tennis says BBC

London, January 18 - Top tennis tournaments such as Wimbledon allegedly were rigged with betting networks in northern Italy and Sicily involved in the fixing, the BBC reported Monday. Over the past 10 years some 16 players ranked among the top 50 in the world were flagged to the Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU) on suspicion they have thrown matches, according to confidential documents obtained by the (BBC) and Buzzfeed News. The documents show betting syndicates in northern Italy, Sicily and Russia made hundreds of thousands of pounds betting on matches investigators thought to be fixed, three of them at Wimbledon, according to the BBC.
