Delrio signs agreements for public highway concessionaires

So-called 'in house' agreements for Autobrennero and Autovie

Delrio signs agreements for public highway concessionaires

Rome, January 14 - Transport Minister Graziano Delrio on Thursday signed memorandums of understanding that will put management of the Autobrennero and Autovie highway systems in the hands of two so-called "in house" public companies. "It's the first time we've used this tool. The use of "in house" is new in our country. It's a method that, when it's managed, assures control over tolls, certainty in investments, and coordination of works in the area," Delrio said. Regarding controversy over state control of the highway systems, Delrio said Europe gives Italy the possibility. "I've heard useless controversy. It's not an extension, we're not doing favors. It's a way that Europe says we can choose to entrust the concession: one is with a tender, the other is with an in-house local area company," he said. "It's a solution that's not competitive like tenders, which are still the principal tool, but it's a possibility that I wanted to explore". Delrio also said recognition of the toll schedule at the beginning of the year "is based on the principle of actual investments, no longer promised investments".
