Turin, January 13 - A court on Wednesday sentenced an anesthetist to five years nine months in prison for faking a workplace accident and a severe disability in order to reap undue benefits. The 56-year-old Iranian was arrested in February last year for simulating a fall down the stairs at the hospital where he worked in 2012, and then pretending to be paraplegic in order to obtain compensation of 1.2 million euros and a disability check of 5,000 euros a month. The anesthetist had accumulated 828 days of absence in seven years of work prior to his fake workplace accident - 720 of them sick days and 102 days to allegedly assist a disabled relative, hospital sources said. Also on Wednesday, the court sentenced his accomplice in the fraud to three years four months in prison. The two worked at Turin's Molinette Hospital.
