Rome says Latorre to stay in Italy during arbitration (2)

Indian Supreme Court extends health permit till April

Rome says Latorre to stay in Italy during arbitration (2)

Rome, January 13 - The foreign ministry in Rome said on Wednesday that Italian marine Massimiliano Latorre will stay in Italy for the duration of the international arbitration of his case and that of a fellow serviceman accused by India of killing two Indian fisherman during an anti-piracy mission in 2012. The ministry cited the August decision by the International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), which said that both countries must suspend any judicial proceedings against the pair pending an International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling on the case. On Wednesday the Indian Supreme Court decided to extend Latorre's permit to stay in Italy for health reasons until April 30. New Delhi allowed Latorre to return to Italy for treatment after he had a stroke in 2014. His previous permit was set to expire on Friday. The other marine, Salvatore Girone, is not permitted to leave India.
