Workers continued protest at Constantine's Arch
(ANSA) - Rome, September 13 - Protesting security workers continued Friday to occupy an historic area near Rome's Colosseum, demanding back pay and an extension of their work contract. The workers, who stayed at the Arch of Constantine overnight Thursday, say they have not been paid for several weeks and want an extension to their contract that ends Sept. 30. After scaling the giant marble arch and suspending a banner calling for "Work, Rights, Dignity" they demanded a meeting with Rome's mayor.
The protestors are part of a group of 146 workers at the Istituto dell'Urbe security firm who are demanding that the city of Rome respects a commitment it says was made to hire them. A group of the same workers staged a similar protest on the Colosseum in 2009. The Arch of Constantine is situated between the Colosseum and the Palatine Hill. It was erected to commemorate Emperor Constantine I's victory at the Battle of Milvian Bridge in 312.
