Fires on Sardinia destroy 8,000 hectares of greenery
(ANSA) - Cagliari, August 9 - Forest fires that destroyed as much as 8,000 hectares of woods and pasture lands and forced evacuations appeared to be finally under control Friday, authorities said. For at least 48 hours, towns in the centre of Sardinia were menaced by raging fires that injured several people and caused evacuations in Laconi. But by Thursday night, the arrival of three Canadair fire-fighting airplanes finally brought blazes under control - although authorities say they will remain alert. They have also begun to investigate whether the fires may have been deliberately set. Rain over the area of Gallura also helped to lower the risk of new fires, although high winds remain a concern. Rough estimates say that about 8,000 hectares of woodland and pastures were destroyed by flames. ''They're still working to clean up the area,'' said Laconi Mayor Ignazio Paolo Pisu. ''Today, everything seems calmer,'' he said, adding that he lifted his evacuation order for the town allowing citizens - who had been forced by the fire risk to sleep in local schools - to return home.
He said that at about 8 p.m.
Thursday, the situation seemed hopeless with the fire spreading wildly up mountain slopes in Sardinia's centre. Only the arrival of five helicopters and three Canadair firefighting planes could halt the blaze. Politicians are now sorting out why it took so long to get help fighting the fires, and causes of the fire. ''I can not say if it was arson....but I would not be surprised to learn that the fires were started deliberately,'' said the mayor.
