Morricone compared to Mozart after Golden Globe win

Renzi hails composer as pride of Italy

Morricone compared to Mozart after Golden Globe win

Rome, January 11 - Veteran Italian composer Ennio Morricone was likened to Mozart on Sunday after winning the Golden Globe - his third - for best original score for Quentino Tarantino's The Hateful Eight. The American director accepted the award on behalf of the 87-year-old composer, thanking and congratulating him in Italian. "Morricone is my favourite composer... like Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert," he gushed. However the composer who made his name with Sergio Leone spaghetti westerns played down the compliment on Monday. "Tarantino is going over the top, you need a historical judgment," he said. "His was an immediate judgment, from a kind person who wanted to give me this praise, but we'll have to wait two centuries to say what he said." Morricone said he didn't expect to win the Golden Globe. "I'm happy but I didn't expect it, one never expects these things," he told Sky TG24 news channel. Meanwhile praise poured in for the veteran composer, who won an Oscar for his career in 2007. Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said Morricone was a source of "pride" for Italy. "Maestro Morricone is a certainty, always," Renzi said. The premier also telephoned the composer to congratulate him in person, sources at the premier's office said. Culture Minister Dario Franceschini likewise described Morricone as a "giant". "Third Golden Globe for #EnnioMorricone. A giant who has made Italy and Italian music and cinema great around the world," he tweeted. Italian filmmaker Giuseppe Tornatore also expressed his pleasure at the award. "For me it is a privilege to know a man aged 87 like him who does everything he does," Tornatore says. The director has worked with Morricone with on numerous award-winning fims including Cinema Paradiso (1988), The Legend of 1900 (1998), The Best Offer (2013) and The Correspondence, which is to be released in Italy on January 14. He is also working on a documentary about the composer, based on a long interview conducted last year. Born in Rome in 1928, Morricone has over 500 film and TV soundtrack credits to his name. He has also conducted orchestras and in June 2015 he presented his Missa Papae Francisci, composed in honour of Pope Francis.
