(see related)Naples, January 11 - Beleaguered Quarto Mayor Rosa Capuozzo of the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S) should not resign over a probe into Camorra mafia infiltration of her administration if her conscience is clear, Naples Mayor Luigi De Magistris said Monday. Capuozzo is facing calls from all sides to step down after an M5S councillor in the town near Naples was ejected from the movement after being placed under investigation for allegedly taking Camorra mafia votes in exchange for a public works contract. The mayor has not been placed under investigation in the probe. "I think that if Rosa Capuozzo... has nothing to hide, she doesn't have to resign," De Magistris said, calling on the embattled mayor to "explain" herself and to "stand tall" against corruption. The former prosecutor described the situation in Quarto as "extremely serious". "This is the first time that a movement that styles itself as representing innovation in politics has come under scrutiny after just a short time for matters pertaining to the Camorra," De Magistris said. "I can see that unfortunately there has been no clarification in this affair but only increasing confusion," he added. Earlier in the day Naples prosecutor Henry John Woodcock said Capuozzo's conduct was "unclear" and requires "in-depth investigation". Capuozzo says she is the injured party as she is the victim of attempted extortion, Woodcock said.
