(ANSA) - Belgrade, January 22 - Balkan composer and world music star Goran Bregovic is accused of plagiarizing one of his old hits in composing the official song for the 2013 Nordic World Ski Championships in Italy.
Bregovic, whose rock group Bijelo Dugme was hugely successful across Yugoslavia in the 1970s and 80s, was paid 84,700 euros to compose the theme song, which bears a remarkable resemblance to his former group's hit 'Hajdemo u Planine' (Let's Go to the Mountains), according to Serb daily Blic.
Organizers of the event, which runs February 20 - March 3, were reportedly "upset" at the fact that, while the commissioned song makes references to regional characteristics such as "polenta, wine, and love in the small wooden houses," there is no mention of the host town of Val di Fiemme. In addition to performing his own songs, Bregovic has composed for Iggy Pop, Cesaria Evora and the films of fellow Sarajevo native Emir Kusturica.
