(ANSA) – Rome, November 6 – Investigations by Naples police into cases of "false invalids" – healthy people who claim a special government pension destined to people with physical or mental handicaps – have led to the arrest of 265 people and the seizure of some 10 million euros. On Tuesday Naples investigators made another breakthrough when another scam was uncovered. In this case, Nunzio Nicola De Marco, a member of a local government commission which authorized government welfare payments to invalids, was found to have sent fake requests for payments along with those for real cases.
De Marco would use counterfeit doctors’ seals on letters for claims for 56 "fake" invalids, which he would send along with the real claims.
Aside from receiving the pension payments, the false claimants would also receive arrears. Part of the claims were kept by the claimants while the rest was collected by De Marco, who used middlemen to cash the claimants' checks in local banks.
