Cohabitation rules in govt bill stoking PD tension - sources

Rome, January 28 - New rules within the Italian government's civil unions bill concerning cohabiting partners are causing divisions in Premier Matteo Renzi's Democratic Party (PD), ANSA sources close to the matter said on Thursday. The Catholic wing of the ruling party has already expressed opposition to the step-child adoption measure in the bill, which would allow gays to adopt their partners' biological children. It has now asked the head of the party in the Senate, Luigi Zanda, for further discussions on the issue of cohabitation, the sources said. The Catholic wing are worried that the establishment of a new form of official cohabitation, along the lines of the PACS in France, could make traditional marriage seem less attractive also to heterosexual couples, according to the sources.
