Rome, January 28 - The Lower House on Thursday passed several motions committing the government to stop the "abuse" by local councils of speed cameras to trap drivers and swell hard-pressed municipal coffers. Italian media have repeatedly denounced the practice by cash-strapped towns around Italy. The motions commit the government to "put an end as soon as possible to the distorted use of instruments aimed at protecting drivers, which are improperly used to feed municipal revenues". It said that often the money obtained was "paradoxically subtracted from goals of driving safety such as road repairs."
