Rome, January 28 - Police on Thursday detained seven alleged members of a mafia clan suspected of illegal possession of weapons, armed robbery and extortion in Italy's southern Puglia region. An eighth suspect was on the run. The operation stemmed from a probe into a new turf war between the Sinesi-Francavilla and Moretti-Pellegrino-Lanza clans over the control of illegal activities in the province of Foggia, which has seen five attempted homicides in recent months. The suspects all allegedly belonged to the Moretti-Pellegrino-Lanza clan. They were detained after a wiretap dating to January 19 revealed a plan to murder a local police inspector and set fire to his vehicle. Puglia's mafia, the Sacra Corona Unita (United Holy Crown), is the smallest and least powerful of Italy's four organised-crime groups. The others are Sicily's Cosa Nostra, Calabria's 'Ndrangheta and Campania's Camorra.
