Salvini doesn't decide on additional budget - Juncker

Brussels, February 21 - European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said Thursday that it is not up to Deputy Premier Matteo Salvini when asked about the latter's confidence Italy will not have to pass an additional budget in the near future to put the public finances in order. "Salvini is not the finance minister," Juncker said. Economy Minister Giovanni Tria said Wednesday "speaking about a possible corrective budget is rather premature just over two months after the talks with the European institutions which positively evaluated the (2019) budget following the negotiations". Tria added that two billion euros had been set aside as a back-up. On Thursday Rome-based daily La Repubblica reported that the Commission will soon release a country report critical of the government's two flagship measures, the 'citizenship wage' basic income for job seekers and the 'quota 100' pension reform bringing down the retirement age for some people. The report will say these measures deflate growth, with negative effects on Italy's GDP, deficit and debt, according to La Repubblica. Juncker's spokesperson said Thursday that the Commission had not discussed the country reports, nor had it made any decisions on Italy's public finances.
