Salvini rules out TAV-Diciotti 'exchange'

Minister says he'll let Senators decide over criminal case

Salvini rules out TAV-Diciotti 'exchange'

Rome, February 4 - Deputy Premier, Interior Minister and League leader Matteo Salvini on Monday ruled out striking a deal with his coalition partners in the 5-Star Movement (M5S) over the Diciotti criminal case and the TAV Turin-Lyon high-speed rail link. Magistrates in the Sicilian city of Catania have requested authorization from parliament to proceed with charges of alleged kidnapping against Salvini over his refusal to allow over 100 asylum seekers saved by the Coast Guard to disembark from the Diciotti ship during a long standoff with the EU in August. Salvini has said the case should not be allowed to proceed as he was doing his job as minister. It is not yet clear whether the M5S's lawmakers will vote for or against giving the magistrates the all clear to proceed. There has been speculation a deal could be reached that would see the M5S vote against this authorization if Salvini agrees for the government to stop the TAV project. The M5S has long been against the TAV on environmental and cost grounds, but Salvini has said it should go ahead. "I'll let each Senator read the documents and decide whether I stopped the disembarkment, something that I will continue to do, to protect the security of the Italian people or for other reasons," Salvini told Radio RAI. "What about a TAV-Diciotti exchange? No. That is old-style politics. "I'm doing my job as a minister and I will keep doing it with pride. "Each individual can think about how they want to vote in the Senate. "I get up in the morning and go to work with peace of mind".
