Carabinieri officers, contractor arrested for corruption

Naples, January 27 - Police on Wednesday arrested a contractor and two Carabinieri officers on suspicion of corruption in public works contracts. Investigators say they uncovered evidence of a long-standing relationship between the contractor, Francesco Caprio, and the two lieutenant colonels in charge of tender offers for defence ministry contracts. Caprio bribed officers Antonio Crisileo and Gaetano Mautone and got at least two renovation jobs in as many Caserta-area barracks as a result, investigators said. He owns several companies including one that manages road maintenance in Caserta. Crisileo was an office manager and Mautone, who allegedly took a 44,000-euro bribe, was in charge of the contracting office. The Army has suspended both officers.
