Around 12 people injured say sources

Two dead in petrol-station explosion

Rieti, December 5 - Two people are dead and about a dozen are injured after an explosion at a petrol station in the central province of Rieti, polices sources said on Wednesday. The dead people are a firefighter and a person who was near to the station when a liquefied petroleum gas tanker exploded at Borgo Quinzio, the sources said. "A red zone has been drawn up around all the area which has been sealed off for the moment," said the mayor of nearby Fara Sabina, Davide Basilicata. "We are waiting for the firefighters to give us the all clear and possible communications about evacuating the area". Rieti police chief Antonio Mannoni said "there was a first fire and when the firefighters and the emergency team were working an extremely violent explosion happened". The firefighter, Stefano Colasanti, was not in the emergency team but had stopped on his way to Rome to try and help out when he saw the first fire. He was then caught by the blast.
