Bomb threat in St. Peter's Square during Hollande visit
(see related) (ANSA) - Rome, January 24 - Police were taking seriously a bomb threat in St Peter's Square during French President Francois Hollande's audience with the pope Friday, hours after an explosive device was detonated outside a foundation linked to France's embassy to the Holy See.
Police received the threat from an anonymous caller who said the device was beneath Bernini's famous colonnade.
Earlier on Friday a rudimentary explosive went off in central Rome, damaging a number of cars, with no reported injuries.
Police are investigating whether the incident could be linked to Hollande's visit.
The last time a French head of State visited the Vatican was in October 2010, when ex-president Nicolas Sarkozy was received by Benedict XVI.
