Venice asks St Mark's to remove turnstile
03 Luglio 2013
The turnstile, which was installed to limit the number of people walking on the basilica's deteriorating floor mosaics, is not the right approach, according to the art and architecture superintendency, which was quoted in the local Gazzettino daily Wednesday. The superintendent's office also criticized a number of large rubber mats put down on top of the Byzantine pavement, which it argues may be attracting harmful moisture.
A better solution, it suggests, may be to charge a one-euro entrance fee, but only after more alternatives had been explored.
