'Third way' on civil unions sought (2)

Rome, January 8 - The ruling Democratic Party (PD) is to seek a "third way" on the contentious issue of stepchild adoption in a civil unions bill, sources said after a meeting between leader and Premier Matteo Renzi, PD whips and Reform Minister Maria Elena Boschi Friday. Conservative Catholics say such adoptions are a gateway to surrogate motherhood. Sources said a "tighter" version of stepchild adoptions might satisfy critics of the bill in the PD and its junior partner the New Centre Right.
