Rome, January 5 - Italian Interior Minister Angelino Alfano said on Tuesday that civil unions "were not part of the government's programme" and warned of the risk posed by tensions over a controversial bill recognising same-sex unions. Alfano told the Rai TG3 news programme that he hoped Premier Matteo Renzi's Democratic Party, which is facing internal disagreements over the civil unions bill, would find a "point of balance". He warned there was a risk that the bill could turn out to be a "snowball that becomes an avalanche". Alfano's New Centre Right (NCD) party, the junior coalition partner, is dead set against one of the bill's provisions, for stepchild adoptions.
